Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lithothamnion is a type of red algae (calcified seaweed) used as a natural source of calcium and other minerals. Its use in supporting or treating osteoporosis is based mainly on its mineral content, particularly calcium and magnesium, which are critical for bone health. Several in vitro and animal studies have shown that Lithothamnion-derived minerals can increase bone mineral density and reduce bone loss. For example, a study in postmenopausal rats suggested that supplementation with Lithothamnion may help maintain bone structure and strength, likely due to its high calcium bioavailability and content of other trace minerals. There is also some preliminary human research; a small randomized controlled trial found that Lithothamnion supplementation improved markers of bone turnover in postmenopausal women.

However, high-quality, large-scale clinical trials in humans are lacking, and most evidence comes from animal models or small pilot studies. Regulatory agencies, such as EFSA, have reviewed claims relating to Lithothamnion and concluded that, while its calcium content can help maintain normal bones, there is insufficient direct evidence for its effectiveness in treating or preventing osteoporosis specifically. In summary, Lithothamnion’s use is scientifically plausible due to its mineral profile, but direct evidence for its efficacy in osteoporosis is limited, and the strength of evidence is currently low to moderate.
