Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Mother of Pearl, also known as nacre, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and other traditional healing systems, primarily to "calm the spirit" and support bone health. In the context of osteoporosis, traditional practitioners have recommended Mother of Pearl based on its rich mineral content, especially calcium carbonate, which led to the belief that it could strengthen bones and tissues. However, scientific evidence to support these claims is limited. A few laboratory and animal studies have investigated nacre's potential to promote bone regeneration or osteoblast activity, but these are preliminary and not directly applicable to osteoporosis treatment in humans. No large-scale, high-quality clinical trials have demonstrated that Mother of Pearl supplementation can prevent or treat osteoporosis in people. Modern medicine relies on well-studied interventions such as bisphosphonates, vitamin D, and calcium supplementation, none of which require nacre. Thus, while Mother of Pearl is used traditionally for bone-related ailments and has some intriguing bioactive properties in early research, the evidence supporting its use for osteoporosis is weak, and it should not be considered a scientifically validated therapy for this condition at present.
