Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sesame seeds have been traditionally used in various cultures, especially in Asian and Middle Eastern medicine, as a food believed to support bone health. Historical texts and traditional practices often cite sesame seeds as a rich source of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and other minerals important for bone maintenance. In Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, sesame is sometimes recommended for strengthening bones and preventing bone-related disorders, including osteoporosis.

However, scientific evidence supporting sesame seed's effectiveness for osteoporosis is limited and mostly indirect. While sesame seeds are indeed high in calcium and other bone-supporting nutrients, there are very few clinical studies directly examining their effect on osteoporosis prevention or treatment in humans. Most available data are based on the nutrient content of sesame seeds and animal studies. For example, some animal research suggests sesame lignans may have beneficial effects on bone metabolism. Nevertheless, the lack of large-scale human trials means that the evidence remains weak.

In summary, the use of sesame seeds for osteoporosis is primarily supported by tradition and their nutrient profile rather than direct scientific validation. While they can be a good source of dietary calcium and other minerals, they should not be relied upon as a sole or primary treatment for osteoporosis without further clinical evidence.
