Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Stilbenoids, a class of polyphenolic compounds that includes resveratrol and pterostilbene, have been researched for their potential role in supporting bone health and mitigating osteoporosis. Most scientific interest centers on resveratrol, which is found in grapes, berries, and peanuts. Preclinical studies (in vitro and animal models) suggest that resveratrol and related stilbenoids can positively influence bone metabolism by promoting osteoblast (bone-forming cell) activity and inhibiting osteoclast (bone-resorbing cell) activity, potentially through modulation of the SIRT1 pathway and estrogen receptor signaling. Some small pilot clinical studies have reported improvements in bone mineral density or bone turnover markers with resveratrol supplementation, but the results are preliminary and inconsistent. There is not yet robust, large-scale clinical trial evidence to support the widespread use of stilbenoids in osteoporosis treatment or prevention. Thus, the scientific evidence is limited and mostly preclinical, with insufficient data for clinical recommendations. The use of unspecified stilbenoids for osteoporosis is not rooted in traditional medicine but rather in emerging laboratory research.
