Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Turtle, particularly turtle shell (often referred to as "Gui Ban" in Traditional Chinese Medicine, TCM), has been used for centuries in East Asian medical systems to support bone health, including the treatment of osteoporosis and related conditions. In TCM, turtle shell is believed to "nourish yin," strengthen bones, and replenish kidney essence, which is thought to be essential for maintaining bone strength. These traditional uses are documented in classical Chinese medical texts and still feature in some herbal formulations today. However, while there is a long history of turtle shell being used for bone health in traditional practices, the scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for osteoporosis is minimal and largely anecdotal. A few animal studies have suggested potential positive effects on bone metabolism, but these are preliminary, and there is a lack of well-designed human clinical trials to substantiate these claims. As such, while turtle shell remains a part of traditional bone-strengthening remedies, current scientific validation for its use in osteoporosis is limited, and its effectiveness has not been established by modern research standards.
