Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Several studies have explored the relationship between unsaturated fats—particularly polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs)—and bone health, including osteoporosis. Omega-3 fatty acids (a type of PUFA) have been investigated for their anti-inflammatory properties, which may play a role in bone remodeling and the prevention of bone loss. Some epidemiological data suggest that diets higher in unsaturated fats, especially from fish and plant sources, are associated with higher bone mineral density (BMD) and a reduced risk of osteoporosis when compared to diets rich in saturated fats. The proposed mechanisms include modulation of inflammation, improvement of calcium absorption, and effects on bone cell activity. However, clinical trials in humans have produced mixed results: while some show modest benefits, others report no significant effect. There is insufficient high-quality, large-scale evidence to recommend unsaturated fats as a primary treatment for osteoporosis. Current guidelines for osteoporosis focus primarily on adequate calcium and vitamin D intake, physical activity, and pharmacological agents when appropriate. Unsaturated fats may be beneficial as part of a healthy dietary pattern but are not specifically endorsed as a treatment for osteoporosis.
