Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Agnoside is an iridoid glycoside primarily found in the fruits of Vitex agnus-castus (chaste tree). This plant has a long history of traditional use in supporting female reproductive health, particularly in Europe and the Mediterranean regions. Historically, extracts of Vitex agnus-castus have been utilized by herbalists to help manage menstrual irregularities, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and other conditions associated with ovarian function. The traditional rationale stems from observations that the plant seemed to influence hormonal balance, possibly by affecting the pituitary gland and thereby modulating prolactin secretion. While there is some modern research on Vitex agnus-castus as a whole, specific studies on agnoside itself are limited. Most available research does not isolate agnoside as the active component but rather investigates the effects of the whole fruit extract, which contains a complex mix of compounds. Some clinical trials and reviews suggest Vitex agnus-castus extracts may be moderately effective for PMS and certain menstrual disorders, but the evidence is not robust and often does not single out agnoside. In summary, the use of agnoside to support the ovarian system is primarily justified by tradition, with a low-to-moderate level of supporting evidence. Current scientific literature does not provide strong or direct validation for agnoside alone in ovarian support.
