Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Aletris, commonly known as Aletris farinosa or "stargrass," has been traditionally used in Western herbal medicine, particularly in North America, as a tonic for female reproductive health. Historical records from the 19th and early 20th centuries show its use among Eclectic and Thomsonian practitioners who recommended Aletris for "female complaints" such as menstrual irregularities, dysmenorrhea, and to "tone" the uterus and ovaries. It was often referred to as a "uterine tonic" and included in herbal formulas for women’s reproductive health, sometimes alongside other botanicals such as Helonias (Chamaelirium luteum). However, modern scientific validation for Aletris’ efficacy in supporting ovarian function or treating gynecological conditions is lacking. There are few, if any, contemporary clinical studies or pharmacological investigations that confirm its traditional uses. The evidence for Aletris supporting the ovaries body system, therefore, rests almost entirely on historical and traditional use, rather than on robust, peer-reviewed scientific data. Due to this reliance on tradition and the absence of modern research, its evidence rating is relatively low.
