Rating (out of 5): 3

Asoka (Saraca asoca) has a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine, particularly for supporting women’s reproductive health, including the ovaries. Traditionally, the bark of the Asoka tree has been used to alleviate various gynecological disorders such as menorrhagia (excessive menstrual bleeding), dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), and irregular menstrual cycles. Ancient Ayurvedic texts, such as the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, describe formulations containing Asoka bark for managing female reproductive complaints, believed to help balance hormones and support uterine and ovarian health.

Modern scientific studies on Asoka’s effects are limited, but some preclinical research and small clinical trials have suggested that Asoka bark extracts possess phytoestrogenic properties, anti-inflammatory, and uterotonic effects. These properties may underpin its traditional use in regulating menstrual cycles and improving overall reproductive health. However, rigorous, large-scale clinical trials validating its efficacy specifically for ovarian function are lacking. Thus, while the traditional use is well-documented and widely practiced in South Asian herbal medicine, strong scientific validation is still pending. The evidence supporting its use for the ovaries is therefore rooted primarily in traditional practices, with moderate support from preliminary scientific data.
