Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Black Haw (Viburnum prunifolium) has a long history of traditional use in supporting the female reproductive system, particularly the uterus and, by extension, ovarian health. Native American and early American herbalists used Black Haw as an antispasmodic to alleviate menstrual cramps, dysmenorrhea, and to prevent miscarriage or preterm labor, conditions often associated with uterine and ovarian function. The plant's bark contains compounds such as salicin, viburnin, and tannins, which are believed to contribute to its muscle-relaxing and anti-inflammatory properties.

Although Black Haw is frequently cited in traditional herbal medicine as a "uterine tonic," direct evidence specifically supporting its use for the ovaries is limited. Most historical references focus on its effects on the uterus rather than ovarian function itself. Nonetheless, because ovarian function is closely tied to menstrual health and uterine activity, Black Haw is sometimes included in formulas aimed at general female reproductive support.

Scientific research on Black Haw is sparse, and there are no robust clinical trials directly linking it to improved ovarian health. Most available studies are limited to laboratory or animal models examining antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, while tradition supports its use for female reproductive health, particularly for menstrual and uterine issues, strong scientific validation for its use specifically for the ovaries is lacking.
