Chaste Tree (Vitex agnus-castus) and Ovarian Health
Chaste tree, also known as Vitex agnus-castus, has a long history of traditional use for supporting female reproductive health, particularly in managing menstrual disorders. More recently, scientific studies have explored its effects on the ovaries, especially in relation to premenstrual syndrome (PMS), luteal phase defects, and certain hormone-related issues.
Clinical trials have shown that chaste tree extract can positively influence hormonal balance, notably by acting on the pituitary gland to modulate the secretion of prolactin and, indirectly, other reproductive hormones like luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). This hormonal regulation is thought to support normal ovarian function, particularly in women experiencing symptoms like irregular cycles, PMS, or mild hyperprolactinemia. Several randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews indicate moderate efficacy of chaste tree extract for PMS and some menstrual irregularities, supporting its use in the context of ovarian health.
However, while there is good evidence for its effects on menstrual-related issues, direct evidence for benefits on ovarian disorders such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is limited. Most benefits appear related to hormone regulation and cycle normalization rather than direct ovarian support.
In summary, the use of chaste tree for supporting the ovarian system is justified by both traditional use and a moderate body of scientific evidence, particularly for hormone-related menstrual concerns.
