Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chinese Chastetree (Vitex negundo) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where it is known as "man jing zi." In TCM, it has been used for a variety of ailments, including headaches, colds, and eye disorders, but also for supporting women's reproductive health, such as regulating menstruation and alleviating certain symptoms related to the ovaries. Its use for supporting the ovaries and menstrual health is based on traditional beliefs in its ability to "dispel wind" and "clear heat," categories in TCM theory often associated with hormonal and reproductive complaints. However, there is limited modern scientific research specifically validating the use of Chinese Chastetree for ovarian health or hormone balance. Most of the scientific studies concerning "chastetree" are actually about Vitex agnus-castus (the European or Mediterranean Chaste Tree), which is better studied for premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and related female health issues. Vitex negundo does have some animal studies indicating possible anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, but direct evidence for its efficacy in supporting ovarian health remains sparse. In summary, the use of Chinese Chastetree for ovarian support is rooted in traditional practice rather than robust scientific validation. More research is needed to determine its effectiveness and safety for this specific application.
