Evidence supporting the use of: Dong quai
For the body system: Ovaries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Dong Quai (Angelica sinensis) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine, particularly for women’s reproductive health. Traditionally, it is known as the "female ginseng" and is used to support menstrual health, alleviate menstrual cramps, and address symptoms of menopause. The root is believed to help balance hormones, nourish the blood, and improve circulation, which are thought to contribute to ovarian and general reproductive health in traditional practices.
From a scientific standpoint, there is limited evidence to validate these uses. Some studies have investigated Dong Quai’s phytoestrogenic properties and its potential to relieve menopausal symptoms, but the findings are inconsistent and often involve combinations with other herbs, making it difficult to attribute effects specifically to Dong Quai. Clinical trials are generally small and of low methodological quality. As of now, there is insufficient robust scientific evidence to strongly support its use for direct ovarian support. Therefore, Dong Quai's use for the ovaries is justified primarily by tradition rather than scientific validation.
