Evidence supporting the use of: Elephant Yam
For the body system: Ovaries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Elephant Yam (Amorphophallus paeoniifolius) has a history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and Siddha, for women's reproductive health. In these traditions, Elephant Yam is believed to support the female reproductive system, including the ovaries, due to its supposed effects on hormone balance and menstrual health. Traditionally, it is thought to help regulate menstrual cycles and alleviate symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and menopause.
However, scientific evidence to substantiate these traditional uses is limited. Some studies have investigated the phytochemical content of Elephant Yam, including its diosgenin content—a compound found in some other plants that serve as a precursor for steroid hormone synthesis. Nevertheless, the actual clinical impact of Elephant Yam on ovarian health or hormone levels in humans has not been clearly established in peer-reviewed research. Most available data are animal studies or in vitro experiments, which do not directly translate into proven benefits for women's reproductive health in humans.
Therefore, while Elephant Yam is indeed used traditionally for supporting the ovaries and reproductive system, robust scientific validation is lacking. Its use for this purpose remains primarily rooted in traditional knowledge rather than strong clinical evidence.
