Evidence supporting the use of: Fatty acids
For the body system: Ovaries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Fatty acids, particularly omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, are supported by scientific evidence for their role in reproductive health, which includes ovarian function. Several studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids (such as EPA and DHA found in fish oil) can influence ovarian steroidogenesis, follicle development, and ovulation. For example, dietary omega-3 supplementation has been associated with improved oocyte (egg) quality and better fertility outcomes in women undergoing assisted reproductive technologies. There is also evidence suggesting that omega-3s can help modulate inflammation and oxidative stress in the ovaries, both of which are implicated in conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis.
However, while the mechanistic and preliminary clinical data are promising, large-scale, high-quality randomized controlled trials are still limited. The evidence is stronger for general reproductive health and management of PCOS symptoms rather than for direct support of ovarian function in healthy women. Overall, the use of fatty acids to support the ovaries is grounded in scientific research, but the strength and directness of the evidence warrant a moderate rating.
