Polyphenols are a diverse group of plant-derived compounds found in foods such as fruits, vegetables, tea, and cocoa. Their use to support ovarian health is primarily based on emerging scientific evidence rather than longstanding traditional use. Several studies have investigated the role of polyphenols—particularly flavonoids and resveratrol—in modulating ovarian function and reproductive health.

Scientific research suggests that polyphenols exert antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, which may help protect ovarian tissue from oxidative damage and aging. For example, animal and cell studies indicate that resveratrol (a polyphenol found in grapes) can improve ovarian reserve, reduce markers of inflammation, and modulate hormonal balance. Some studies have explored the potential of polyphenols to ameliorate polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) symptoms, improve oocyte quality, and even delay ovarian aging through antioxidative mechanisms.

However, the majority of this evidence is preclinical (cell culture and animal studies), with only limited clinical trials in humans. The results are promising but not definitive. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale and preliminary evidence for polyphenols supporting the ovaries, robust clinical evidence in humans is still lacking, resulting in a moderate score for evidence.
