Evidence supporting the use of: Stem Cells
For the body system: Ovaries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Stem cells have been investigated for their potential to support ovarian function, especially in the context of ovarian insufficiency, premature ovarian failure, and infertility. There is a growing body of pre-clinical and early clinical research suggesting that transplanting various types of stem cells (such as mesenchymal stem cells derived from bone marrow, adipose tissue, or umbilical cord) into the ovaries may help restore ovarian structure and function. Studies in animal models have shown improvements in follicle development, hormone production, and, in some cases, the resumption of fertility. Early-phase human clinical trials suggest that stem cell therapy is feasible and may improve ovarian reserve markers or menstrual function in women with diminished ovarian reserve or premature ovarian failure. However, these studies are generally small, lack long-term follow-up, and are often uncontrolled or non-randomized. As such, while there is scientific rationale and preliminary evidence for using stem cells to support ovarian health, robust, large-scale clinical trials are needed to confirm their safety and efficacy. Currently, stem cell therapy for ovarian support remains experimental and is not standard practice. There is no significant historical or traditional use of stem cells for this purpose, as the technology is relatively recent.
