Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bauhinia, particularly species such as Bauhinia forficata (commonly known as "Pata-de-vaca"), has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in South America, for supporting pancreatic health and managing blood sugar levels. In Brazilian folk medicine, Bauhinia leaves are often brewed as tea for people with diabetes, under the belief that it helps regulate glucose metabolism and supports the pancreas, particularly its insulin-producing function. However, while a few preclinical studies suggest potential hypoglycemic activity of extracts from certain Bauhinia species, robust clinical data in humans is lacking. The mechanism of action and direct effect on the pancreas, especially the head of the pancreas, are not well characterized in scientific literature. Most evidence for using Bauhinia to support the pancreas is thus founded on ethnobotanical records and anecdotal reports rather than rigorous clinical trials. Therefore, while there is a traditional basis for its use, the overall evidence remains limited, and caution should be exercised due to potential variability in species, preparation, and dosing.
