Evidence supporting the use of: Chinese Yam
For the body system: Pancreas Head
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chinese Yam (Dioscorea opposita or Dioscorea polystachya) is traditionally used in Chinese medicine to support the digestive system, including the spleen and pancreas. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the pancreas is not always discussed as a distinct organ, but the "spleen" system is believed to include functions related to digestion, nutrient absorption, and metabolic processes, which overlap with the Western understanding of the pancreas. Chinese Yam is thought to strengthen the spleen and stomach, improve appetite, and address symptoms such as fatigue and diarrhea, which in TCM theory can be related to "spleen qi deficiency."
From a scientific perspective, there is only limited evidence for its direct effects on pancreatic function. Some laboratory studies suggest antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and a few animal studies indicate potential benefits for blood glucose regulation, which could indirectly support pancreatic health. However, these findings are preliminary and do not establish a clear mechanism or clinical benefit for the pancreas specifically. Clinical trials in humans are lacking.
Therefore, the use of Chinese Yam to support the pancreas is primarily justified by traditional usage (TCM theory) rather than strong scientific validation. The traditional rating is moderate due to the long history of use, but the scientific evidence remains weak.
