Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Diastase is a group of enzymes, mainly amylases, that catalyze the breakdown of starch into maltose and other sugars. These enzymes are naturally produced in the human body, predominantly by the pancreas and salivary glands. The use of diastase as a supplement, particularly in the context of supporting pancreatic function, has a scientific basis. In cases of pancreatic insufficiency—where the pancreas does not produce enough digestive enzymes—supplemental enzyme preparations, including amylases (diastase), are used to aid in the digestion of carbohydrates. This therapeutic approach is especially common in conditions like chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, or after pancreatic surgery.

Scientific evidence shows that enzyme replacement therapy can help improve nutrient absorption and reduce gastrointestinal symptoms in individuals with pancreatic insufficiency. However, the evidence does not indicate that diastase supplementation enhances pancreatic health in individuals with normal pancreatic function; its use is specifically as a replacement rather than a tonic or general support. Therefore, the application of diastase to support the pancreas head body system is scientifically validated, but primarily for the treatment of enzyme deficiency, not for general pancreatic "support" in healthy individuals. The strength of evidence for its use in pancreatic insufficiency is moderate, justifying a rating of 3 out of 5.
