Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Dolichos biflorus, commonly known as horse gram, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Siddha. In these traditions, it is used for a variety of ailments, particularly those related to digestion and metabolism. Regarding its use to support the pancreas or the "Pancreas Head" body system, there is evidence in Ayurvedic literature suggesting it is recommended for conditions like diabetes ("Madhumeha"), which involves pancreatic function. Some classical Ayurvedic texts describe Dolichos biflorus as having properties that help with "kapha" disorders, which can include metabolic imbalance. However, scientific studies specifically on Dolichos biflorus and its direct effect on pancreatic health or function are limited. A few animal studies and in vitro experiments suggest it may have hypoglycemic properties, but these are preliminary and not yet robustly validated in humans. Thus, while its use for supporting the pancreas is rooted in traditional use and some indirect evidence, there is insufficient scientific validation at this time. The evidence rating is 2, reflecting moderate traditional support but limited direct scientific backing.
