Enzyme blends, typically consisting of digestive enzymes like amylase, protease, lipase, and sometimes additional enzymes such as lactase or cellulase, are used to support the pancreas primarily because the pancreas is the main organ responsible for producing digestive enzymes. There is substantial scientific evidence supporting the use of exogenous (supplemental) digestive enzymes in individuals with pancreatic insufficiency—a condition where the pancreas does not produce enough enzymes, often seen in chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, or after pancreatic surgery. Multiple clinical studies have shown that enzyme replacement therapy can significantly improve nutrient absorption, reduce gastrointestinal symptoms, and enhance quality of life in people with pancreatic enzyme insufficiency.

For instance, guidelines from gastroenterological societies recommend pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) as a standard of care for managing pancreatic exocrine insufficiency. Placebo-controlled trials have demonstrated that oral enzyme supplements improve fat and protein digestion and reduce symptoms like steatorrhea (fatty stools) in affected patients. However, the evidence for benefits in healthy individuals, or for general “support” of pancreatic health in people without enzyme insufficiency, is limited and not well-established.

In summary, the use of enzyme blends is scientifically validated for specific pancreatic disorders involving insufficient enzyme production, but not broadly for general pancreatic health in those with normal pancreatic function.
