Jambolan (Syzygium cumini), also known as Java plum or Jamun, has a long history of traditional use in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems for managing diabetes and related pancreatic disorders. Scientific studies over the past two decades have begun to validate these traditional claims, particularly in the context of blood glucose regulation and pancreatic beta-cell support. Experimental research, primarily in animal models and in vitro studies, has demonstrated that various extracts of Jambolan seeds, pulp, and leaves exhibit hypoglycemic effects, potentially by enhancing insulin secretion, improving insulin sensitivity, or protecting pancreatic beta-cells from oxidative stress-induced damage. Some studies have isolated active compounds—such as jamboline, ellagic acid, and anthocyanins—that may contribute to these effects. Human clinical studies are limited but show promising results in improving glycemic control in people with type 2 diabetes. However, the evidence is not yet robust or extensive, and more large-scale, well-designed human trials are needed to fully substantiate its efficacy and safety for supporting the pancreas, particularly the pancreatic head and its specific physiological functions. Thus, while there is a scientific basis, the overall evidence is moderate and mostly preclinical.
