Rating (out of 5): 4

Antimony has been used in the treatment of parasitic diseases, particularly leishmaniasis and schistosomiasis, based on scientific evidence. Since the early 20th century, compounds of antimony, especially pentavalent antimonials such as sodium stibogluconate and meglumine antimoniate, have served as first-line drugs for treating leishmaniasis, a disease caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania. The efficacy of these drugs has been demonstrated in numerous clinical trials and is supported by guidance from the World Health Organization (WHO). Antimonials act by interfering with the parasite's energy metabolism, although the exact molecular mechanism remains under investigation. Their use is, however, associated with significant toxicity and the emergence of drug resistance in some regions, which has led to the development and approval of alternative therapies. Nonetheless, antimonials remain important, especially in resource-limited settings. Historically, antimony compounds were also used in the treatment of schistosomiasis, but due to their toxicity and the advent of safer alternatives like praziquantel, their use has largely been discontinued for this indication. In summary, the use of antimony for certain parasitic infections is rooted in scientific validation, with substantial historical and clinical evidence supporting its effectiveness, particularly against leishmaniasis.
