Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Asam gelugor (Garcinia atroviridis), also known as "asam keping," has a long history of use in traditional Southeast Asian medicine and cuisine. In ethnobotanical records, it is sometimes mentioned as a remedy for digestive ailments, including intestinal worms and general parasitic infections. The dried fruit slices are commonly used in traditional Malay and Thai herbal practices, where decoctions or infusions are sometimes consumed with the belief that they help "cleanse" the digestive tract or expel parasites. However, scientific studies specifically investigating the antiparasitic efficacy of Asam gelugor are scarce or lacking. Most of the research on Garcinia species focuses on their antioxidant, antimicrobial, or anti-obesity properties, with little direct evaluation of antiparasitic activity in vitro or in vivo. Therefore, while its use for this purpose is primarily justified by tradition and anecdotal reports rather than rigorous scientific validation, the evidence supporting its effectiveness against parasites remains weak and unsubstantiated by modern clinical studies.
