Evidence supporting the use of: Cinquefoil
For the health condition: Parasites (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Cinquefoil (Potentilla species) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe and parts of Asia. Traditionally, various species of cinquefoil have been employed for a variety of ailments, including gastrointestinal disturbances, inflammation, and as a remedy for “worms” or intestinal parasites. However, most of these uses are based on folk practices rather than on rigorous scientific studies. Historical herbal texts sometimes mention cinquefoil as a component of remedies intended to expel intestinal worms, likely due to its astringent and mildly bitter properties, which were commonly believed to discourage parasitic infestations. Despite this, there is a lack of modern clinical or pharmacological studies confirming any antiparasitic activity of cinquefoil extracts in humans or animals. The evidence supporting its use for treating or supporting the body against parasites is therefore largely anecdotal and rooted in tradition. No specific phytochemicals from cinquefoil have been clearly identified as effective antiparasitic agents. As a result, while cinquefoil has a traditional reputation for use against parasites, there is minimal scientific validation for this application.
