Evidence supporting the use of: Desmodium (unspecified)
For the health condition: Parasites (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Desmodium species, particularly Desmodium adscendens and other related plants, have a history of traditional use in various regions, especially in Africa and Asia, for the treatment of a range of ailments, including those believed to be caused by parasites. Ethnobotanical surveys document that preparations made from Desmodium leaves or aerial parts have been used in folk medicine to address symptoms attributed to intestinal worms and other parasitic infections. For example, in some West African traditional medical systems, Desmodium is employed as part of herbal mixtures for deworming or to alleviate gastrointestinal complaints thought to be linked to parasitic infestations.
However, the scientific literature provides limited direct evidence supporting the antiparasitic efficacy of Desmodium species. While some laboratory studies have explored the plant’s antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, or hepatoprotective properties, research specifically targeting antiparasitic activity (against helminths, protozoa, or other parasites) is scarce or inconclusive. Thus, while the use of Desmodium for parasites has traditional roots, there is insufficient scientific validation at this time. Further studies are necessary to confirm its efficacy and to identify any active compounds with antiparasitic properties.
