Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Fumitory (Fumaria officinalis) has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine, primarily for liver, skin, and digestive complaints. Its use as a remedy for parasites is less well-documented but does appear in some folk medicine traditions, where it was thought to "purify the blood" and expel "worms" or intestinal parasites. However, this application is not widespread compared to its other uses, and there are very few specific references in authoritative herbal texts regarding its efficacy against parasites. The presumed antiparasitic effect is likely based on its general bitter and purgative qualities, which were historically associated with ridding the body of unwanted organisms. Scientifically, there is insufficient evidence to support these claims: modern pharmacological studies on Fumitory have focused on its alkaloids and flavonoids for their anti-inflammatory, choleretic, and spasmolytic effects, with minimal investigation into antiparasitic activity. Therefore, while there is some traditional precedent for its use against "parasites" in a general sense, this is weak and not supported by rigorous scientific validation.
