Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Leptadenia, particularly Leptadenia reticulata, has a history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and folk medicine in India. Its applications have included various ailments, and some traditional texts and ethnobotanical reports mention its use for conditions associated with parasites, most notably as part of remedies for intestinal worms and other parasitic infections. The plant is reputed to have anthelmintic properties, and certain preparations of Leptadenia are used in rural settings for expelling intestinal parasites. However, the scientific evidence supporting these traditional uses is limited. A few in vitro and in vivo studies have indicated possible anthelmintic effects of Leptadenia extracts, but these studies are preliminary, often conducted on animal models or using parasite eggs in laboratory settings. Comprehensive clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the exact mechanisms of action remain unclear. Therefore, while the traditional use is documented, and there is some low-level preclinical support, the overall evidence base is weak. Given the predominance of traditional use with limited scientific validation, the evidence rating is set at 1, indicating that while the practice exists in folk medicine, strong supporting data is not available. Health professionals generally do not recommend Leptadenia for parasite treatment due to this lack of robust evidence.
