Evidence supporting the use of: Sesbania (unspecified)
For the health condition: Parasites (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Sesbania species, particularly Sesbania grandiflora and Sesbania sesban, have been traditionally used in folk medicine to treat parasitic infections, especially intestinal worms. Ethnobotanical surveys from regions such as India, Southeast Asia, and parts of Africa report the use of Sesbania leaf or seed extracts as anthelmintic agents in indigenous medical systems. The seeds, in particular, are sometimes ground and administered to expel intestinal worms in humans and livestock. However, scientific evidence validating these uses is limited. A few in vitro and animal studies have indicated that extracts of Sesbania may possess some anthelmintic activity, but these studies are preliminary and have not led to widespread clinical validation or approval. The active compounds potentially responsible include saponins and alkaloids, which are known to possess biological activity against some parasites. Despite traditional usage and some promising early research, there is insufficient robust clinical evidence to confirm efficacy or safety for the treatment of parasites in humans. Therefore, while the use of Sesbania for parasitic infections is rooted in tradition and supported by limited preliminary studies, it cannot yet be considered scientifically validated.
