Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Solanum anguivi, commonly known as African eggplant or bitter tomato, has a history of traditional use in various African communities for the management of parasitic infections. Ethnobotanical surveys and traditional medicine reports indicate its use against intestinal worms and other parasites. The fruit, leaves, or decoctions made from the plant are sometimes administered as anthelmintic remedies. However, the scientific validation for these uses is limited. A few in vitro and animal model studies have suggested that extracts from Solanum anguivi may have some activity against certain parasites, but these are preliminary and do not provide strong evidence for efficacy or safety in humans. The primary support for its use remains traditional, passed down through generations, with little robust clinical research to confirm effectiveness. Thus, while commonly cited in folk medicine for treating various parasitic conditions, Solanum anguivi’s use is not strongly backed by modern scientific data at this time.
