Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Berberis species, such as Berberis vulgaris (barberry), have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems for a variety of ailments, including infections and digestive disturbances. In several traditional systems, especially in Ayurvedic, Unani, and folk medicines, Berberis preparations have been used to address intestinal worms and other parasitic infections. The presumed efficacy is largely attributed to the presence of berberine, a bioactive alkaloid found in the roots and bark of Berberis species, which is thought to possess antimicrobial and antiparasitic properties.

However, while there is some in vitro and animal data suggesting berberine may have activity against certain parasites, robust clinical evidence in humans is lacking. Most of the justification for using Berberis against nematodes and worms comes from traditional knowledge and historical usage rather than modern clinical trials. Therefore, while Berberis is traditionally used for this purpose, contemporary scientific validation is limited, and the evidence strength is rated at 2 out of 5.
