Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Albizia species, particularly Albizia lebbeck, have a history of use in traditional medicine systems across Asia and Africa for a variety of ailments, including as an anthelmintic (anti-parasitic) agent. Ethnobotanical surveys and historical records indicate that powdered bark, seeds, or extracts of Albizia have been administered to expel intestinal worms, such as tapeworms, in humans and livestock. This use is documented in Ayurveda and Unani medicine, where Albizia preparations are sometimes included in deworming formulations.

However, scientific validation for this use remains limited. While some in vitro and animal studies have suggested possible antiparasitic or anthelmintic activity of Albizia extracts, the evidence is neither robust nor specific to tapeworms (Cestoda). The majority of these studies test efficacy against nematodes (roundworms) rather than cestodes, and clinical trials in humans are lacking. Thus, while Albizia is traditionally used to treat or support the expulsion of worms, including tapeworms, there is insufficient scientific evidence to rate its effectiveness highly. Further research would be required to confirm its efficacy and safety for this particular indication.
