For the health condition: Parasites (tapeworm)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Brucea javanica (Java Brucea) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in China and Southeast Asia, for the treatment of various parasitic infections, including those caused by tapeworms. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Brucea javanica seeds are documented in classical texts as an anthelmintic agent, used to expel intestinal parasites such as tapeworms, roundworms, and pinworms. The active compounds, mainly quassinoids, are believed to have antiparasitic effects. However, direct scientific evidence specifically supporting the efficacy of Brucea javanica against tapeworms in humans is limited. Most modern research on Brucea javanica focuses on its anticancer and antimicrobial properties rather than its anti-parasitic effects.
There are some in vitro and animal studies that suggest Brucea javanica extracts may have activity against certain parasites, but robust clinical trials in humans for tapeworm infections are lacking. As such, its use is largely justified by traditional practices rather than strong scientific validation. Standard pharmaceutical anthelmintics remain the mainstay of treatment for tapeworm infections in modern medicine. Therefore, while tradition supports its use, scientific evidence is modest and not sufficient for mainstream clinical recommendation.
