Rating (out of 5): 3

Bacopa monnieri, commonly known as Bacopa or Brahmi, is a herb traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for cognitive enhancement and stress relief. Modern scientific studies have begun to elucidate mechanisms by which Bacopa may support the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), which governs "rest and digest" physiological activities. Research suggests that Bacopa extracts have anxiolytic and adaptogenic properties, potentially through modulation of neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine and serotonin. Several animal and limited human studies indicate that Bacopa can reduce stress markers and promote calmness, possibly by enhancing parasympathetic tone and attenuating the sympathetic (fight-or-flight) response. While Bacopa is best known for cognitive effects, some randomized controlled trials have reported improvements in stress adaptation and lowered cortisol levels, which are indirectly associated with enhanced parasympathetic activity. However, direct clinical evidence for Bacopa's impact on the PNS is moderate; most data are extrapolated from broader studies on stress, mood, and autonomic balance. The current scientific consensus is that Bacopa may support parasympathetic function due to its calming, adaptogenic, and neuroprotective effects, but more targeted research is required to confirm these benefits specifically for the PNS. Therefore, the scientific evidence is rated as moderate (3/5), reflecting promising but not definitive support.
