Bacopa (most commonly Bacopa monnieri, also known as Brahmi) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, where it is prized as a "medhya rasayana"—a rejuvenator of the mind, cognition, and nervous system. In Ayurveda, Bacopa is believed to enhance memory, reduce anxiety, and promote calmness, which are effects associated with supporting the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS)—the branch of the autonomic nervous system responsible for "rest and digest" functions. The traditional rationale is based on Bacopa’s reported abilities to reduce stress and promote relaxation.

Scientifically, Bacopa has been studied primarily for its effects on cognitive function, memory, and anxiety. Some animal and limited human studies suggest that Bacopa extracts may reduce stress and anxiety, possibly through modulation of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and acetylcholine. However, direct scientific evidence that Bacopa specifically and robustly supports the parasympathetic nervous system as a body system is limited. Most studies reference general anxiolytic or adaptogenic effects, rather than targeted PNS activity. Therefore, while traditional use is strong, scientific support specifically for PNS support remains preliminary.
