Bacoside, the primary active constituent of Bacopa monnieri (Brahmi), has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for its cognitive-enhancing and calming properties. Recent scientific research has provided some support for its influence on the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for "rest and digest" functions in the body. Animal studies and limited human trials indicate that bacosides may exert anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects and promote relaxation, possibly through modulation of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and acetylcholine. Additionally, some research suggests that Bacopa monnieri extracts can reduce physiological markers of stress, such as cortisol, and may increase vagal tone, a marker of parasympathetic activity. However, most studies have focused on cognitive function, memory, and general stress reduction rather than direct, robust measures of parasympathetic nervous system activity. While the evidence is promising and biologically plausible, it remains moderate, with a need for more focused clinical trials in humans to definitively establish Bacopa’s role in supporting the parasympathetic nervous system.
