Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine as a "Medhya Rasayana," or brain tonic, to support cognitive function and mental clarity. In modern research, Brahmi has been studied primarily for its effects on brain health, memory, and anxiety. The parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) is responsible for "rest and digest" activities, promoting relaxation and recovery in the body. Several preclinical studies and a handful of human clinical trials have shown that Brahmi extracts can reduce anxiety, improve memory, and enhance cognitive performance, effects that are thought to be mediated in part by modulation of neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine and serotonin. Animal studies suggest Brahmi may increase parasympathetic activity, as evidenced by reduced heart rate and increased vagal tone, although direct human evidence for enhancement of PNS function is limited. Most human studies focus on cognitive or anxiolytic outcomes rather than direct measures of parasympathetic activity. Overall, there is moderate scientific evidence that Brahmi supports nervous system relaxation and may indirectly support parasympathetic function, but more targeted clinical research is needed to confirm this mechanism in humans.
