Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Convolvulus pluricaulis, commonly known as Shankhpushpi, has a long history of use in Ayurvedic and traditional Unani medicine for its reputed calming and nootropic effects. Traditionally, it is believed to act as a "medhya rasayana" (brain tonic) and is often used to promote mental relaxation, improve cognition, and reduce symptoms linked with stress and anxiety. These traditional uses suggest an indirect support of the parasympathetic nervous system, which governs "rest and digest" functions in the body. While there is some preclinical research indicating that Convolvulus pluricaulis extracts may have anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing), sedative, and neuroprotective actions in animal models, there is limited direct scientific evidence linking its use specifically to measurable enhancement or modulation of the parasympathetic nervous system in humans. Most available studies are small, preliminary, or conducted in vitro or in animals, focusing on behavioral outcomes rather than clear autonomic nervous system markers. As such, the use of Convolvulus pluricaulis for supporting the parasympathetic nervous system is primarily justified by traditional knowledge, with only modest and indirect scientific support as of now.
