Eleuthero root (Eleutherococcus senticosus), also known as Siberian ginseng, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese and Russian herbal medicine as an adaptogen—a substance believed to help the body resist stressors of all kinds. Its traditional use is not specifically tied to the "parasympathetic nervous system" as defined by modern physiology, but rather to the general idea of supporting vitality, resilience, and recovery from fatigue or illness. In traditional contexts, eleuthero has been used to help balance the body's response to stress, which could conceptually be linked to supporting autonomic balance, including the parasympathetic nervous system.

Scientific studies on eleuthero have mainly focused on its adaptogenic effects and potential to improve physical and mental performance, reduce fatigue, and modulate the body’s stress response. Some animal and in vitro studies suggest eleuthero may help regulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which indirectly interacts with autonomic nervous system function. However, direct scientific validation that eleuthero specifically supports or enhances parasympathetic nervous system activity is lacking. Most clinical trials are small, with mixed results, and do not directly measure parasympathetic function. Therefore, while tradition supports the use of eleuthero for stress and resilience, scientific evidence for its targeted effects on the parasympathetic nervous system is weak and largely indirect.
