Gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where it is known as "Zhizi." In TCM, gardenia fruit is used to clear heat, calm irritability, and support various organ systems, including calming the mind and promoting relaxation—effects that can be broadly related to supporting the parasympathetic nervous system. Its traditional indications include treating agitation, insomnia, and restlessness, which are suggestive of effects on the body's ability to relax and recover.

From a scientific perspective, there is limited direct evidence that gardenia or its constituents specifically support the parasympathetic nervous system. Some animal studies have suggested that geniposide, a major iridoid glycoside in gardenia fruit, may exert neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and anxiolytic effects. However, these studies do not conclusively demonstrate a direct effect on the parasympathetic nervous system in humans. Most of the justification for gardenia’s use in this context therefore relies on centuries of empirical use and documentation in traditional medicine systems, rather than robust clinical trials or mechanistic studies.

In summary, gardenia’s use for supporting the parasympathetic nervous system is primarily justified by traditional use, with only preliminary and indirect scientific evidence supporting this application.
