Evidence supporting the use of: Honokiol
For the body system: Parasympathetic Nervous System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Honokiol is a bioactive compound derived from the bark of Magnolia species, traditionally used in East Asian medicine for its calming and anxiolytic properties. Scientific interest has focused on its effects on the central and autonomic nervous systems, including the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). Preclinical research indicates that honokiol exhibits anxiolytic and sedative effects in animal models, possibly by modulating GABAergic neurotransmission, which is closely linked to parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) activity. For example, studies have shown that honokiol can enhance GABA(A) receptor activity, leading to reduced anxiety and increased relaxation in mice (J Nat Prod, 2007; Phytother Res, 2011). These effects suggest a potential to support or enhance parasympathetic function by promoting a state of calm and counteracting sympathetic overactivity. However, most evidence comes from animal studies or in vitro research; human clinical trials are limited. While traditional use supports honokiol’s general calming effects, scientific validation specifically for direct support of the parasympathetic nervous system is emerging but not yet robust. Therefore, the use of honokiol for PNS support is scientifically plausible and partially validated, meriting a moderate evidence rating.
