Rating (out of 5): 2

Jujubosides are active saponin compounds extracted from the seeds of Ziziphus jujuba (commonly known as jujube), a herb traditionally used in Chinese medicine. Historically, jujube seed extracts have been used for their sedative and anxiolytic effects, which are believed to promote relaxation and support the parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) branch of the autonomic nervous system. Classical texts and herbal compendia describe their use in calming the spirit, addressing insomnia, and reducing symptoms of anxiety and nervousness.

Scientific studies on jujubosides are limited but have shown some promise in animal models. Some preclinical research suggests that jujubosides may modulate GABAergic and serotonergic neurotransmission, mechanisms associated with parasympathetic activation and relaxation. For example, studies in mice have demonstrated that jujubosides can reduce anxiety-like behaviors and prolong sleep time, supporting their traditional uses. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the evidence base is not strong enough to provide scientific validation for their use in supporting the parasympathetic nervous system in humans. Therefore, the use of jujubosides for this purpose is primarily justified by tradition, with preliminary but insufficient scientific support.
