Evidence supporting the use of: Kava kava
For the body system: Parasympathetic Nervous System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Kava kava (Piper methysticum) is traditionally used in the South Pacific for its calming and anxiolytic effects, and modern research has investigated its impact on the nervous system. The parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for "rest and digest" functions, promoting relaxation and reducing stress. Scientific studies have shown that kava kava contains kavalactones, which interact with various neurotransmitter systems, particularly GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) receptors, to induce relaxation and reduce anxiety. The modulation of GABAergic activity is associated with enhanced parasympathetic nervous system activity, resulting in lowered heart rate, reduced muscle tension, and a subjective sense of calm.
Several clinical trials have demonstrated that kava extracts can help reduce symptoms of anxiety, and some physiological studies suggest it may shift autonomic balance towards parasympathetic dominance, as measured by heart rate variability and other markers. However, while there is evidence for its calming, anxiolytic, and muscle relaxant effects (all related to enhanced parasympathetic tone), direct studies specifically targeting parasympathetic nervous system function are limited. Most evidence is indirect, focusing on anxiety reduction and relaxation. Safety concerns about potential hepatotoxicity also limit its widespread use. In summary, kava kava's support of the parasympathetic nervous system is backed by moderate scientific evidence, primarily through its anxiolytic and relaxing effects, though not by direct measurement of parasympathetic function in most studies.
