Kavalactones are the primary active compounds found in the roots of the kava plant (Piper methysticum). Their traditional use is rooted in South Pacific cultures, where kava has been consumed for its calming and anxiolytic effects. Scientifically, kavalactones have been shown to modulate neurotransmitter systems in the brain, particularly by influencing GABAergic activity, which is closely associated with the parasympathetic nervous system’s "rest and digest" functions. Studies suggest that kavalactones can reduce anxiety, promote relaxation, and induce mild sedation without significantly impairing cognitive function, effects that are consistent with parasympathetic activation.
Clinical trials and meta-analyses have demonstrated the efficacy of kava extracts (standardized for kavalactone content) in reducing symptoms of anxiety compared to placebo, supporting their use for conditions characterized by sympathetic overactivity. However, most of these studies focus on anxiolytic outcomes rather than direct measurement of parasympathetic nervous system activity. While there is evidence that kavalactones support relaxation and calmness associated with parasympathetic dominance, the evidence base is moderate, with concerns about potential hepatotoxicity limiting long-term or high-dose use. Overall, the support for kavalactones in promoting parasympathetic nervous system activity is scientifically plausible but not yet definitive.
