Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Nymphaea caerulea, commonly known as blue lotus, has a long history of traditional use, especially in ancient Egyptian culture where it was revered for its psychoactive and relaxing properties. Traditionally, blue lotus was used to induce states of relaxation, euphoria, and sometimes mild sedation, which may suggest a supportive effect on the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), as the PNS governs "rest and digest" functions and promotes calmness. However, scientific research specifically linking Nymphaea caerulea or its constituents (such as aporphine alkaloids) directly to measurable effects on the parasympathetic nervous system is extremely limited. Most available evidence remains anecdotal or is based on traditional ethnobotanical reports rather than rigorous clinical studies. Some laboratory studies have indicated potential sedative or antispasmodic effects in extracts of related Nymphaea species, but these findings are not robust or conclusive for Nymphaea caerulea itself. Therefore, while traditional use suggests a role in supporting relaxation and possibly the PNS, the scientific evidence is currently weak, and claims should be viewed with caution until further research is conducted.
