Evidence supporting the use of: Calcium Magnesium Citrate
For the body system: Parathyroid Glands
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Calcium Magnesium Citrate is commonly used to support parathyroid gland function due to its essential roles in calcium and magnesium homeostasis. The parathyroid glands regulate the body's calcium and, to some extent, magnesium levels through the secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH). Scientific evidence supports the use of calcium and magnesium supplementation in individuals with deficiencies or disorders affecting parathyroid function, such as hypoparathyroidism or hyperparathyroidism. Hypoparathyroidism can lead to low blood calcium levels, often necessitating calcium supplementation, sometimes in combination with vitamin D and magnesium, to restore balance. Magnesium is crucial because it is a cofactor in the synthesis and secretion of PTH; magnesium deficiency can impair PTH secretion and action, exacerbating calcium imbalances.
Several clinical guidelines recommend calcium and magnesium supplementation for patients with parathyroid disorders, especially when dietary intake is insufficient or when there is documented deficiency. Calcium citrate, in particular, is often preferred over other forms because it is better absorbed, especially in individuals with low stomach acid. While supplementation is not generally needed for healthy individuals with normal parathyroid function, there is robust scientific validation for its targeted use in managing parathyroid-related disorders. However, there is little evidence for a direct effect of supplementation on “supporting” healthy parathyroid glands in the absence of deficiency or disease.
