Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 5

Vitamin D is scientifically validated as essential for the normal functioning of the parathyroid glands and the regulation of calcium and phosphate homeostasis in the body. The parathyroid glands secrete parathyroid hormone (PTH), which works closely with vitamin D to maintain serum calcium levels. When calcium levels are low, PTH stimulates the conversion of inactive vitamin D to its active form (calcitriol) in the kidneys. Active vitamin D then increases intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphate, helping to restore normal serum levels. Deficiency in vitamin D can lead to secondary hyperparathyroidism, where the parathyroid glands become overactive to compensate for low calcium, increasing the risk of bone demineralization and related disorders such as osteomalacia and osteoporosis (Holick MF, 2007, N Engl J Med). Supplementation with vitamin D (D2 and D3, often referred to as "mixed") is a cornerstone in the prevention and treatment of disorders related to parathyroid dysfunction and calcium imbalance. Clinical guidelines from endocrine societies universally recommend vitamin D supplementation in patients at risk for or diagnosed with parathyroid disorders, especially in cases of hypoparathyroidism or secondary hyperparathyroidism due to chronic kidney disease (Brandi ML et al., 2016, J Clin Endocrinol Metab). In summary, robust scientific evidence supports the use of vitamin D to support parathyroid gland function and maintain calcium homeostasis.
