Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Panax ginseng has attracted scientific interest for its potential neuroprotective effects, including possible benefits in Parkinson’s Disease (PD). Preclinical studies, primarily in animal models and cell cultures, have shown that ginsenosides—the active compounds in ginseng—may exert antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic effects on dopaminergic neurons. These mechanisms are relevant because oxidative stress and neuroinflammation are implicated in the progression of PD. Some animal studies have demonstrated that ginsenosides can reduce neuronal loss and improve motor function in PD models.

However, the level of scientific evidence supporting the use of Panax ginseng for Parkinson’s Disease in humans remains limited. There are very few clinical trials, and those that exist are small and preliminary, focusing on safety and feasibility rather than robust efficacy outcomes. Systematic reviews of herbal treatments for PD typically note that while ginseng shows promise in preclinical research, there is not yet enough high-quality clinical evidence to recommend its use for patients. Therefore, while the use of Panax ginseng for PD is justified by emerging scientific rationale and experimental data, clinical validation in humans is still lacking.
