Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Hesperetin is a flavonoid predominantly found in citrus fruits and is a metabolite of hesperidin. In relation to Parkinson’s Disease (PD), hesperetin is not a traditional remedy but has been investigated in preclinical (animal and cell culture) studies for its neuroprotective effects. Evidence suggests that hesperetin exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic properties, all of which could be beneficial in neurodegenerative conditions like PD, where oxidative stress and neuroinflammation are key contributors to disease progression.

Several animal studies have demonstrated that hesperetin can ameliorate motor deficits and protect dopaminergic neurons in toxin-induced models of PD, primarily by reducing oxidative stress markers and modulating inflammatory pathways (e.g., Neurochemistry International, 2017; Brain Research, 2019). Hesperetin was shown to inhibit microglial activation and preserve mitochondrial function, both of which are compromised in PD. However, these findings are limited to laboratory models, and there are currently no published human clinical trials evaluating hesperetin as a treatment for Parkinson’s Disease.

In summary, while there is some scientific rationale and preclinical evidence supporting hesperetin’s neuroprotective effects in PD models, clinical evidence in humans is lacking. Therefore, its use for Parkinson’s Disease is not yet validated for clinical practice but is of research interest.
